FS has introduced an 800G Linear Pluggable Optics (LPO) module optimized for AI and HPC data center interconnects, targeting efficiency gains over conventional DSP-based optical modules. The 800G DR8 OSFP finned top transceiver achieves a maximum power draw of 8.5W—roughly half that of 800G DSP optics—while delivering lower end-to-end latency by eliminating DSP processing stages. The design leverages TIA and driver chips with high linearity and EQ to maintain signal integrity, offering a cost-optimized alternative for dense GPU cluster deployments.

The LPO architecture aims to address the dual challenges of power efficiency and latency in AI-scale networking. By reducing heat and cooling requirements, FS positions the module as both an energy-saving and cost-saving option for operators deploying massive AI/ML and supercomputing workloads. Early validation tests, including BER and optical spectrum evaluations, confirmed error-free operation in field trials with FS’s own LPO switches, underscoring its readiness for production environments.

For hyperscalers and enterprises racing to build AI factories, the FS 800G LPO module highlights a growing shift toward streamlined optics as an alternative to DSP-heavy solutions. This approach reduces latency for real-time training workloads while promising faster ROI for high-density deployments where energy budgets are a critical bottleneck.

• FS launched an 800G DR8 OSFP finned top Linear Pluggable Optics module designed for AI/HPC data centers.

• The module consumes just 8.5W, about 50% less than DSP-based 800G optics.

• Eliminates DSP processing to achieve significantly lower latency for AI training and HPC applications.

• Uses TIA and driver chips with high linearity and EQ to balance cost and performance.

• Proven in field trials with FS LPO switches, confirming reliability under real-world workloads.

“FS is committed to driving next-generation optical innovation,” said Jon Zheng, senior technical director at FS. “The 800G LPO module reflects our dedication to delivering high-performance, energy-efficient, and reliable connectivity solutions for global clients, empowering them to secure competitive advantages in modern data center deployments.”

🌐 Analysis: FS joins a growing set of vendors pushing LPO into AI and HPC environments, where energy budgets and ultra-low latency have become critical differentiators. While competitors such as Broadcom, Marvell, and InnoLight are also advancing 800G optics, FS’s emphasis on power and cost efficiency positions it to attract mid-market operators alongside hyperscalers. The adoption curve for LPO will hinge on ecosystem readiness—including switch support, signal integrity under long runs, and operator willingness to trade DSP-based reach for efficiency at rack scale.
