Google is committing $9 billion to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure in Virginia through 2026, with a new data center campus planned for Chesterfield County and upgrades to its existing facilities in Loudoun and Prince William Counties. The investment cements Virginia’s role as the world’s largest data center market and strengthens its position as a hub for AI development.
The Chesterfield County facility will join Google’s existing Virginia campuses as part of its global data center backbone, supporting AI services and cloud operations. Google is eligible for Virginia’s Data Center Sales and Use tax exemptions on qualifying equipment and software. Alongside infrastructure spending, the company will expand education and workforce development programs, including free access to the Google AI Pro plan for all Virginia college students for 12 months.
Google also named the University of Virginia, Brightpoint Community College, and Northern Virginia Community College as participants in the first Google AI for Education Accelerator cohort. These institutions will provide faculty, staff, and students no-cost access to Google Career Certificates and AI training courses.

“With today’s announcement, Google is deepening our roots in Virginia; extending our investments across the state to help position Virginia—and America—for the opportunities technology can deliver,” said Ruth Porat, Alphabet and Google President and Chief Investment Officer.
🌐 Analysis: This expansion highlights Virginia’s dominance as the world’s top data center market, where hyperscalers like Google, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft continue to cluster infrastructure. The Chesterfield project reflects the growing spread of hyperscale campuses beyond Northern Virginia’s traditional Ashburn hub as companies seek new land, power, and tax advantages. It also underscores Google’s strategy to couple infrastructure investment with AI workforce development, differentiating from rivals who have emphasized capacity first and education partnerships second.
