Google Invests €5 Billion to Expand AI Infrastructure in Belgium

Google announced plans to invest €5 billion (US$5.4 billion) over the next two years to strengthen its AI and cloud infrastructure in Belgium. The initiative will expand data center campuses in Saint-Ghislain and create approximately 300 full-time jobs, reinforcing the country’s position as a key European hub for digital infrastructure.

The investment includes new clean energy partnerships with Eneco, Luminus, and Renner to develop additional onshore wind farms and supply renewable power to Belgium’s electricity grid. These efforts align with Google’s goal of operating entirely on carbon-free energy by 2030 and advancing sustainable data center operations across Europe.

Beyond infrastructure, Google pledged to fund AI-skills programs for Belgian residents, including free training for low-skilled workers and nonprofit-led education initiatives designed to prepare communities for an AI-driven economy.

• €5 billion (US$5.4 billion) investment over two years

• Expansion of data centers in Saint-Ghislain, creating 300 jobs

• Partnerships with Eneco, Luminus, and Renner for new wind projects

• Free AI and digital skills training for workers through nonprofit collaborations

• Supports Google’s broader European sustainability and digital inclusion goals

“Belgium has been at the heart of our European operations for nearly two decades, and this investment deepens our commitment to its people, economy, and digital future,” said a Google spokesperson.

🌐  Analysis: Google’s expanded footprint in Belgium underscores the growing convergence of AI infrastructure, renewable energy, and workforce development as strategic levers for Europe’s digital competitiveness. The move follows major hyperscaler expansions across the EU—including Microsoft’s recent AI datacenter investments in Sweden and AWS’s renewable-backed projects in Spain—signaling intensifying competition to anchor the region’s AI ecosystem.
