Google announced a $9 billion investment through 2027 to expand its AI and data infrastructure in South Carolina. The funding will accelerate growth at the company’s existing Berkeley County data center campus and support construction of two additional facilities in Dorchester County. The expansion strengthens South Carolina’s position as a key U.S. hub for hyperscale cloud and AI infrastructure.
As part of the initiative, Google.org is granting funds to the Electrical Training Alliance (etA) to integrate AI tools into its curriculum. The program will prepare over 160 apprentices for careers in the state’s rapidly expanding technology and energy sectors, aligning workforce development with the needs of next-generation data centers. Google said the initiative reflects its commitment to sustainable economic growth and to building a skilled local talent pipeline.
The company has been expanding its U.S. data center footprint alongside global projects in the UK and Belgium, responding to soaring AI and cloud computing demand. In South Carolina, Google already operates one of its largest facilities, serving as a backbone for Google Cloud, Search, and YouTube.
“Our investment in South Carolina represents our confidence in the state’s people and its potential to drive the next wave of digital innovation,” a Google spokesperson said.
🌐 Analysis: Google’s latest commitment underscores how hyperscale data center growth is clustering in energy-rich U.S. regions with strong training ecosystems. It follows similar U.S. expansions by Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon, all racing to build AI-optimized infrastructure. The integration of workforce grants highlights the increasing linkage between AI infrastructure and community development programs.
