Juniper Networks unveiled its E320 Broadband Services Router — the industry’s highest capacity broadband router with scalability to 320 Gbps. Based on the existing E-series platforms, Juniper’s new flagship edge router is designed to address the key challenge in deploying Triple Play services — how to scale the network in terms of subscriber density and bandwidth-per-user.
Key features of the E320 platform include:
- available as either a 100 Gbps or 320 Gbps chassis
- Scales to 128,000 subscribers
- 80 – 180 mpps performance
- Hitless SRP failover
- 1:4 switch fabric redundancy
- 1:N line card redundancy
- Two 40 Gbps “turbo slots” for future expansion
- High-density Gigabit Ethernet aggregation
- Advanced QoS with TR-059 support
- Advanced multicast capabilities. This could be used by IPTV providers to conserve bandwidth out to IP-enabled DSLAMs or ONTs. For instance, hundreds of IPTV channels could be received at the E320. The top 50 channels would be multicast to every DSLAM, When a subscriber requests one of the less popular channels, the request would be passed up the network to the E320.
The E320 platform leverages the same JUNOSe modular operating system software, mid-plane chassis design and ASICs as the existing E-class routers. However, the E320 will use all-new line-cards that will be introduced over the coming months. These include a 4 Gbps line module, 4-port GigE, 8-port OC-3 ATM, 2-port OC-12 ATM, 2-port OC-12 POS, 1-port OC-48 POS, 1-port 10GigE, an a Tunnel Services Module.
The E320 platform is currently in beta testing by major carriers. General availability is slated for later this year.
Juniper said it is continuing to enhance its existing E-series platforms. At Supercomm, the company is introducing two new line cards for the ERX routing platforms:
- a High-Density Ethernet (HDE) line module that provides 8 ports of Gigabit Ethernet per slot and increases the Ethernet density of the ERX-1440 to 96 ports per chassis. The Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) optics offers a wide range of port options for increased flexibility.
- an ATM plus Ethernet line module that provides a combination of Ethernet and ATM technology in a single slot. This line module provides two ports of ATM OC3/STM1 and a redundant Gigabit Ethernet port to help ease the migration from ATM access to next-generation Ethernet access networks.
