Leaving #OFC50 in a Waymo with Adtran:

SAN FRANCISCO – OFC 2025: Adtran’s Stephan Rettenberger joined Converge Digest’s Jim Carroll for a 31-minute deep-dive into next-gen optical infrastructure while riding through San Francisco in a Waymo robotaxi. The conversation ranged from AI-driven optical transport and broadband architecture to quantum security and entanglement-era dreams.

🚘 00:00 – Setting the Stage: OFC50 and Automation Celebrating 50 years of OFC, Rettenberger remarks on the symbolism of conducting the interview in an autonomous Waymo—an apt metaphor for Adtran’s mission to simplify and automate optical networks.

🧠 00:55 – New IP-Optimized OLS for AI Infrastructure Adtran introduced a new IP OLS platform as part of its FSP 3000 family: • Fully integrated, 1RU footprint • Targets AI data center interconnects with 100ZR, 400ZR, 800ZR support • Future-proofed for 1.6T and designed for “optical novices” This was co-developed with a major U.S. wholesaler to accelerate hyperscaler-ready deployments.

🔧 01:57 – Simplifying the Line System Despite ZR optics being plug-and-play, the OLS still requires analog engineering. Adtran addresses this by: • Embedding OTDR for real-time fiber visibility • Removing complexity via automation—“a fiber multiplier” for ZR optics

📡 04:57 – Active Line Monitoring (ALM) Adtran’s ALM system keeps tabs on fiber health, offering: • Out-of-band, always-on monitoring • Pinpoint location of breaks/intrusions • Reduced MTTR and truck rolls • Extended applicability into access networks and PON

🧪 06:11 – Monitoring PON Beyond Splitters Adtran applies its OTDR intelligence to XGS and 50G PON, overcoming splitter opacity via patented tech. Their monitoring works for both single-ended and dual-ended topologies.

🚀 06:55 – 50G PON Innovation & Market Entry 50G PON is aimed at: • Enterprise services demanding uncontended 10G • Residential sharing of excess bandwidth • Seamless coexistence with XGS-PON and GPON With early adopters in Europe and the U.S., Adtran sees 50G PON moving into mainstream by 2026.

🌍 09:59 – Regional Growth & Huawei Replacements In Europe, Adtran enjoys traction among alt-nets and incumbents, aided by Huawei’s declining presence. In the U.S., they serve tier 2/3 telcos with both disaggregated and traditional platforms.

💰 11:14 – Stimulus, Fiber Buildouts, and ARPU Trends Rettenberger anticipates strong fiber activity regardless of LEO or FWA subsidies. He cautions about: • Civil engineering constraints • Overheating construction demand Yet notes rising fixed-line ARPU in some regions—a reversal from declining mobile economics.

🔌 12:25 – Power and Space Optimization Adtran delivers 100ZR pluggables in 5W envelopes, enabling: • Network layer collapse • Fewer active devices • Site consolidation and real estate reduction These changes matter as energy costs and sustainability remain top of mind.

⏱️ 22:25 – Precision Timing with Oscilloquartz Originally built for 5G synchronization, Adtran’s Oscilloquartz line now supports: • APNT applications (defense, power, critical infrastructure) • Terrestrial alternatives to GPS • Optically pumped cesium clocks, unmatched for longevity and accuracy

🛡️ 25:53 – Quantum-Safe Networking: From PQC to QKD To secure optical transport in a post-quantum world, Adtran offers: • Post-Quantum Crypto (PQC) for encryption • Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) with vendor interoperability • Commercial QKD deployments integrating with Toshiba and ID Quantique engines The platform supports ETSI-standardized QKD interfaces, making it vendor-agnostic.

🌀 29:44 – Quantum Frontiers: Entanglement and Networking Rettenberger envisions a future where quantum entanglement enables latency-free networking, far beyond today’s optical constraints. Adtran actively collaborates with European and U.S. research institutions to prepare for that future.

🧩 Key Takeaways for Network Professionals Focus Area Innovation Highlights AI-Ready OLS 1RU, ZR-agnostic, open line system Fiber Monitoring Always-on OTDR via ALM, now PON-capable 50G PON Tailored for enterprise, coexists with legacy PON Power Savings 100ZR pluggables at 5W enable layer collapse Precision Timing GPS-alternatives, Oscilloquartz cesium clocks Quantum Security PQC + QKD integration, ETSI-compliant systems

🛑 Final Destination: As their Waymo rolled to a stop in Golden Gate Park, Rettenberger reflected on the pace of innovation, the narrowing ROI of higher-speed optics, and Adtran’s role in guiding telcos and hyperscalers alike through a transformative decade in optical networking.
