Nokia Bell Labs Breaks Ground on New HQ

Nokia Bell Labs has officially broken ground on a new state-of-the-art headquarters at The HELIX innovation district in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The move represents a symbolic and operational milestone for the organization as it celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2025. The new site, located at “H-2” within the HELIX development, is expected to open in 2028 and will serve as a modern research hub designed to support the next century of innovation in communications, AI, and network technologies.

This relocation marks the end of an era for the Murray Hill campus in New Providence, NJ, which has been synonymous with Bell Labs since 1941. Designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, Murray Hill housed some of the 20th century’s most groundbreaking scientific work. It was the birthplace of the transistor (1947), the laser (1958), and key developments in information theory, digital signal processing, and fiber optics. The site contributed to nine Nobel Prizes and helped define the course of modern telecommunications and computing.

By moving to New Brunswick’s HELIX NJ—a mixed-use innovation complex adjacent to Rutgers University and major medical research facilities—Nokia Bell Labs aims to deepen its integration with the East Coast tech and academic ecosystem. The new building will feature purpose-built labs and collaboration spaces, supporting open innovation across disciplines. Executives say the decision was guided by long-term strategy and the symbolic timing of the Bell Labs centennial. “What a nice birthday present for #NBL100,” noted Nokia Bell Labs leadership in today’s announcement.
