Nokia finalized the sale of its submarine cable subsidiary, Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN), to the French State on December 31, 2024, with the transaction publicly announced on January 3, 2025. The French State, represented by the Agence des participations de l’Etat, acquired a controlling interest, while Nokia retains a 20% shareholding and board representation to ensure a smooth operational transition before a full exit. ASN, a major global player in submarine network systems, is positioned for continued growth under new ownership, while Nokia shifts focus to its core Network Infrastructure business, including its recently announced acquisition of Infinera.
ASN is a global leader in submarine communication networks, known for delivering turnkey subsea cable systems and operating a specialized fleet for cable laying and maintenance. Under Nokia’s ownership, ASN expanded its market reach and technological capabilities. Its current fleet includes seven cable ships, with the “Ile de Sein” and “Ile d’Aix” among the vessels actively engaged in projects such as the 2Africa subsea cable and SEA-ME-WE 6. This sale ensures continued development of a key strategic asset for France and Europe while securing long-term investment in ASN’s vertically integrated technology and services.
The divestment aligns with Nokia’s strategy to streamline its business portfolio and concentrate on high-growth areas. Nokia began accounting for ASN as a discontinued operation from Q2 2024. The French State has committed to maintaining ASN’s operational continuity, preserving its technological leadership, and supporting long-term innovation.
