Nokia joined the Open Compute Project (OCP) as a Platinum member, expanding its role in developing open, interoperable infrastructure for large-scale AI networks. The move positions Nokia inside a 500-member ecosystem focused on building architectures that scale up within data centers and scale out across distributed sites—an increasingly critical requirement as AI workloads strain the limits of conventional enterprise-designed networks.
Nokia plans to collaborate with OCP members on designs that optimize space, power, and cost while supporting multicloud, multi-data-center AI clusters. Its contributions will draw on the company’s optical and IP integration capabilities, high-speed interconnects for compute-to-compute fabrics, AI-native wireless, efficient PON out-of-band management, and automated, AI-driven network operations. The company says AI traffic is reshaping both hyperscale data center networking and the network edge, where capacity, energy, and scalability pressures are rising sharply.
Nokia’s data center networking portfolio spans high-performance switching and optical modules for intra-data-center connectivity, as well as IP and optical platforms for inter-data-center transport. The company says these technologies are engineered to support distributed AI and cloud architectures that must interconnect multiple physical sites at very high speeds and with strict energy-efficiency requirements.
