Nokia Launches 5G FRMCS Solution to Modernize Railways

Nokia introduced a commercial 5G radio solution to support the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), positioning it as the next global standard for digital railway operations. The new system includes the first commercial 5G radio for the 1900 MHz (n101) band and Nokia’s Core Enterprise Solution for Railways, both designed to provide high-capacity, low-latency, and mission-critical connectivity for operators transitioning from GSM-R.

The solution enables automated train operations, cross-border interoperability, and enhanced passenger services while supporting the coexistence of legacy GSM-R systems during migration. Its cloud-native 5G standalone (SA) core delivers the full suite of FRMCS functionalities, including real-time control, predictive maintenance, and mission-critical voice, video, and data communications. Nokia’s system will also undergo testing as part of the EU-funded FP2-MORANE-2 project, advancing the rollout of FRMCS across Europe.

With over two decades of experience in GSM-R deployments in more than 20 countries, Nokia has worked closely with operators, governments, and standardization bodies to shape FRMCS. The new platform is designed for modular and scalable deployment, from regional rollouts to nationwide systems, supporting sustainable, automated transport and improved operational efficiency.

• Nokia launched the industry’s first commercial 5G radio for the 1900 MHz (n101) band

• Supports migration to FRMCS, the 5G-based global successor to GSM-R

• Features a cloud-native, railway-optimized 5G SA core

• Enables automated train control, predictive maintenance, and real-time passenger information

• Tested under the EU-funded FP2-MORANE-2 project for European rail digitalization

“Our commercial 5G solution, backed by decades of proven rail industry expertise, reflects our commitment to laying the foundation for the next generation of railway operations,” said Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia.

🌐 Analysis: Nokia’s FRMCS-ready solution marks a critical step in global railway modernization. Europe is leading with EU-backed projects, but adoption is expected worldwide as rail operators replace aging GSM-R systems. Competitors such as Huawei, Ericsson, and rail-focused system integrators are also investing in FRMCS-aligned solutions, making early commercial offerings like Nokia’s key to shaping standards and capturing market share.
