Nokia has expanded its defense portfolio with two tactical communication solutions designed for next-generation battlefield connectivity: the Nokia Mission-Safe Phone and an upgraded Nokia Banshee 5G Tactical Radio. Both products aim to enhance mission-critical communications, delivering high bandwidth, low latency, and reliable connectivity in the harshest operational environments.
The Mission-Safe Phone is a defense-grade smartphone engineered in Europe with a Qualcomm long-lifecycle chipset. It features military-standard durability (MIL-STD 810H and IP68 certification) and supports advanced applications for real-time battlefield intelligence. Available in three versions, it offers an open and customizable platform for adding new applications and accessories. The device is validated with Nokia’s existing Banshee tactical portfolio and works seamlessly with complementary systems like Savox Communications for enhanced audio performance.
The upgraded Banshee 5G Tactical Radio now includes integrated 5G capabilities, delivering higher throughput and lower latency than its predecessor. Designed as a rugged, portable “network in a box,” the system can be deployed quickly to establish secure, mobile networks in the field. With improved data-sharing and coordination capabilities, the new Banshee solution provides a flexible tactical hub for defense teams operating in unpredictable environments.

Giuseppe Targia, Head of Space and Defense at Nokia, said: “By harnessing the power of 5G and edge computing, Nokia is accelerating the digital transformation of battlespace. This launch marks a step toward unified battlefield communications. With the Nokia Mission-Safe Phone and the Nokia Banshee 5G Tactical radio, we’re enabling next-generation connectivity and resilience.”
🌐 Analysis: Nokia’s move strengthens its positioning in the defense communications market, where secure, ruggedized 5G solutions are gaining traction. The combination of a purpose-built smartphone and a portable tactical radio aligns with military priorities of interoperability, modularity, and rapid deployment. Competitors such as L3Harris, Thales, and Collins Aerospace are also advancing edge-ready 5G and tactical networking systems, but Nokia’s fully integrated ecosystem—spanning devices, radios, and automation—provides it with an end-to-end offering that could appeal strongly to NATO and allied defense forces.
