Nokia has been selected by TenneT, a leading European offshore transmission system operator, to provide optical networking technology for eight 2-gigawatt (2GW) offshore wind platforms in the Dutch North Sea. The platforms, commissioned by TenneT through consortia including Petrofac and Hitachi Energy, GE Vernova-Seatrium, and GE Vernova-McDermott, will transmit large volumes of renewable wind energy to the Dutch mainland. Nokia’s optical network technology will provide long-distance connectivity, ensuring secure and reliable management of offshore platforms, contributing to Europe’s 2050 climate neutrality goals.

Nokia will deploy its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) solution, designed to support long-distance transmission of up to 400 km with extended reach amplification technology. This system will link offshore platforms to TenneT’s onshore telecommunications network, enabling real-time monitoring and remote operations. The technology will ensure high-performance optical transport, even in challenging offshore conditions, with Nokia providing design, testing, and ongoing operational support.

• Client: TenneT, a European offshore transmission system operator.

• Project Scope: Optical networking for eight 2GW offshore wind platforms.

• Technology Deployed: Nokia 1830 PSS DWDM with extended reach amplification.

• Transmission Distance: Up to 400 km with single-span unrepeatered transmission.

• Consortia Involved: Petrofac and Hitachi Energy, GE Vernova-Seatrium, GE Vernova-McDermott.

• Project Timeline: Initial deployment starts early 2025, first platform operational by 2029.

• Sustainability Impact: Facilitating renewable energy delivery for millions of homes across Europe.
