Nortel Ships Wireless Mesh Network

October 12, 2004
in Uncategorized
A A

Nortel Networks began shipping a wireless mesh network solution designed to go beyond traditional Wi-Fi hot spots to provide secure wireless coverage indoors and outdoors throughout an urban area or large campus. The 802.11b Wireless Mesh Network connects access points installed inside or outside, and enables seamless roaming between access points. It incorporates ‘auto discovery’ and ‘self healing’ capabilities to simplify deployment and reduce service outages by automatically reconfiguring the network as access points are added or removed.

The mesh capabilities are available on the Nortel Networks Wireless Access Point 7220 and Wireless Gateway 7250. http://www.nortelnetworks.com

  • In August 2004, Nortel Networks will resell PacketHop’s secure mobile mesh solution as a homeland security communications solution for law enforcement and public safety agencies. The PacketHop system consists of client software that is loaded onto IP radio-equipped devices along with real-time multimedia applications specifically designed for server-less operations. Nortel Networks’ Wireless Mesh Network portfolio consists of its Wireless Access Point 7220, Wireless Gateway 7250 and Optivity Network Management system. Joint solutions from PacketHop and Nortel Networks are targeted for availability in Q4 2004. PacketHop is a start-up based in Belmont, California.
