NXP Semiconductors agreed to acquire Kinara, a start-up developing energy-efficient discrete neural processing units (NPUs). The $307 million all-cash transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2025, subject to regulatory approvals. This acquisition enhances NXP’s intelligent edge processing portfolio, integrating Kinara’s NPUs with NXP’s existing ecosystem of processing, connectivity, security, and advanced analog solutions.
Kinara’s NPUs, including the Ara-1 and Ara-2, offer leading AI inference performance, particularly in vision, voice, and multi-modal generative AI applications. With up to 40 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second) of AI compute power, these solutions will help industrial and automotive customers optimize edge AI workloads with greater efficiency. Kinara’s software stack, which includes model libraries and optimization tools, will be integrated into NXP’s eIQ AI/ML software platform, enabling developers to rapidly build and deploy AI-powered edge applications.
• $307 million acquisition to strengthen NXP’s AI processing capabilities
• Kinara’s Ara-1 and Ara-2 NPUs bring scalable AI inference to the edge
• Integration with NXP’s eIQ AI/ML software for seamless AI deployment
• Optimized for industrial and automotive AI applications, including vision and voice recognition
