President Trump Issues Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence

A A

President Trump issued an executive order, “Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence,” aimed at bolstering U.S. dominance in AI technology. The directive sets forth a national policy to sustain and enhance the country’s competitive edge in AI innovation by removing regulations that the administration views as impediments to progress. The order mandates the development of an AI Action Plan within 180 days and revokes Executive Order 14110, issued in 2023, which focused on “Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence.”

Key elements of the executive order include the formation of a task force led by the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, the Special Advisor for AI and Crypto, and other senior administration officials. The task force will evaluate and revise existing AI policies to align with the new directive’s goals of promoting human flourishing, economic competitiveness, and national security. It also directs agencies to review and adjust actions taken under the revoked Executive Order 14110, with the aim of eliminating perceived obstacles to AI advancement.

• Revokes Executive Order 14110, which emphasized secure and trustworthy AI, to clear perceived regulatory hurdles.

• Orders the creation of a comprehensive AI Action Plan within 180 days, spearheaded by top advisors and agency heads.

• Calls for the review and revision of existing OMB policies (M-24-10 and M-24-18) to ensure alignment with the administration’s AI policy goals.

• Emphasizes the U.S. commitment to maintaining global leadership in AI innovation for economic, security, and societal benefits.
