Qualcomm Technologies is advancing global 5G infrastructure by deploying its Dragonwing Cellular Infrastructure platforms in collaboration with leading operators. Vietnam’s largest mobile network operator, Viettel, has implemented a live 5G Open RAN Massive MIMO network utilizing Qualcomm’s Dragonwing solutions. Additionally, NTT DOCOMO in Japan has selected Qualcomm’s Dragonwing X100 Accelerator Cards for its nationwide 5G virtualized RAN (vRAN) deployment, highlighting the commercial readiness of Open RAN technologies.

Viettel’s deployment integrates Qualcomm’s Dragonwing QRU100 Platform for O-RAN Radio Units with virtualized Distributed Units (vDU) powered by the Dragonwing X100 Platform, optimizing the processing of compute-intensive tasks. NTT DOCOMO’s selection includes an NEC vDU equipped with Dragonwing X100 Accelerator Cards featuring integrated Layer 1 software. This choice followed rigorous interoperability, compliance, and performance testing, confirming the solution’s readiness for commercial use. Beyond Japan, the global expansion of Open RAN is facilitated by OREX SAI, an NTT DOCOMO Group entity supporting Open RAN verifications for telecom operators worldwide.

Qualcomm’s Dragonwing platforms enhance 5G Massive MIMO network performance and energy efficiency, reducing costs for modern 5G network deployments. The company’s collaborations with ecosystem partners—including AWS, Fujitsu, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Mavenir, NEC, Tejas, and VHT—are accelerating the commercialization and global adoption of Open RAN solutions. “We are energized by the accelerating Open RAN adoption and commercial traction using our Dragonwing Cellular Infrastructure solutions,” said Gerardo Giaretta, vice president of product management at Qualcomm Technologies. “Large-scale nationwide rollouts mapped out for Japan and Vietnam is itself a huge success, but the engagements have global potential.”
