Rakuten Mobile has selected Fujitsu to accelerate the deployment of 5G base stations in Japan, using radio units (RU) designed to enhance network efficiency and coverage. The collaboration will support Rakuten Mobile’s 5G Sub6 expansion throughout 2025, leveraging Fujitsu’s compact, energy-efficient RU technology. This move aligns with Rakuten Mobile’s commitment to Open RAN standards, ensuring interoperability with a diverse range of network equipment vendors.

The 44R21 RU, developed by Fujitsu, adheres to O-RAN specifications and enables seamless communication between distributed units (DU) and centralized units (CU) via a fronthaul interface. Its compatibility with multiple vendors strengthens supply chain resilience and offers telecom operators greater flexibility in network infrastructure choices. Additionally, Fujitsu’s proprietary design minimizes space requirements and reduces operational costs, contributing to more efficient 5G network deployments. The 44R21 model will be showcased at MWC Barcelona 2025.

Rakuten Mobile plans to leverage its virtualization technology and existing infrastructure to streamline the rollout process and lower deployment costs. Rakuten Symphony and Fujitsu will also explore future collaborations to drive the global adoption of Open RAN technology.

• Rakuten Mobile to deploy Fujitsu’s 44R21 RU to accelerate 5G Sub6 expansion in Japan.

• The RU is compact, energy-efficient, and compliant with O-RAN specifications.

• Proven interoperability with various domestic and international vendors.
