Rivada Secures Nordic Market Access Amid Rising Infrastructure Threats

Rivada Space Networks has obtained market access rights for its Outernet satellite communications network in Finland, Sweden, and Denmark, expanding its footprint to 20 countries. This development comes as security concerns over critical communications infrastructure escalate in the Nordic region. Recent incidents, including the severing of an undersea cable linking Finland to Germany and a disruption on the 218 km (135 mi) Lithuania-Sweden Gotland connection, underscore the vulnerabilities in existing subsea networks.

The Outernet, Rivada’s 600-satellite low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation, offers a terrestrial-free alternative for secure, high-capacity global connectivity. Utilizing laser-linked satellites that bypass ground-based infrastructure, the network ensures uninterrupted communication and protection from fiber-based disruptions. Rivada’s focus on enterprise and government users aims to address the increasing threats of sabotage and the weaponization of critical infrastructure, providing a resilient solution with low latency and broad coverage.

Declan Ganley, Rivada’s CEO, highlighted the growing demand for secure, fiber-independent connectivity. “We are seeing unprecedented demand for Rivada Outernet capacity, especially among data-critical users in enterprises and government. Unlike other satellite constellations, Outernet users will access our satellite network directly, ensuring unmatched security and absolute protection from cable cuts,” said Ganley.

Key Points

• Rivada Space Networks secured market access in Finland, Sweden, and Denmark, reaching 20 countries globally.

• Recent subsea cable incidents emphasize the vulnerability of shared critical infrastructure.

• The Outernet provides a terrestrial-free, ultra-secure satellite network with direct user access, bypassing ground stations.

• The 600-satellite LEO constellation delivers low latency, high capacity, and robust connectivity for enterprise and government users.

• The network is designed to mitigate risks from fiber disruptions and ensure uninterrupted global communication.

Ann Vandenbroucke, Chief Regulatory Officer, stated, “Market access for the Nordic region is a priority in Rivada’s roadmap to ensure that the Outernet can mitigate valid concerns of accidents or even infrastructure weaponization with our resilient and robust infrastructure.”
