Sabey Data Centers Looks to Nuclear Power with TerraPower

TerraPower, a leading nuclear innovation company, and Sabey Data Centers (SDC), one of the largest private data center operators in the United States, have announced a strategic collaboration to integrate TerraPower’s advanced Natrium technology into SDC’s current and future operations. This partnership aims to address the growing energy needs of data centers, particularly as the demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing continues to surge.

TerraPower recently broke ground on America’s first advanced nuclear project in Wyoming, near a retiring coal facility. This project will showcase its Natrium technology, which combines a 345 MW sodium-cooled fast reactor with a molten salt-based energy storage system. The system’s unique ability to boost power output to 500 MW during peak demand makes it an ideal solution for the increasingly energy-intensive requirements of data centers. This first-of-its-kind commercial plant is expected to come online by 2030 through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP).

The partnership will explore deploying additional Natrium plants in the Rocky Mountain region and Texas, with the aim of powering SDC-owned data centers sustainably. TerraPower and SDC are also evaluating multiple project execution models to meet the exponential energy demands anticipated in the coming years.

Chris Levesque, TerraPower’s President and CEO, highlighted the importance of cross-industry collaboration: “The energy sector is transforming at an unprecedented pace after decades of business as usual. By partnering with Sabey, we can ensure that advanced nuclear technology plays a vital role in securing a clean, resilient energy grid while addressing the surging demands of data centers.”

Tim Mirick, President of Sabey Data Centers, echoed this sentiment: “Our collaboration with TerraPower represents a substantial move toward integrating clean, innovative power technologies into the heart of our operations. Sabey is committed to pioneering sustainable energy solutions to support our customers’ growth.”

Jeffrey Kanne, Vice Chairman of Sabey Data Centers, added, “This strategic relationship exemplifies the forward-thinking collaboration necessary to meet the evolving energy demands of our digital future.”

The rise of AI and data centers is projected to increase U.S. electricity demand by 323 terawatt hours by 2030. As one of the largest private data center developers in the nation, SDC is focused on achieving carbon-free energy operations across its extensive portfolio of facilities. With over 20 years of experience in data center development and operations, Sabey has long been an industry leader in energy efficiency and sustainability.
