Scotland’s Commsworld Builds EoFTTP using Ciena’s XGS-PON

Scottish ISP Commsworld is introducing a new business-grade Ethernet over Fibre to the Premises (EoFTTP) service, leveraging Ciena’s XGS-PON technology to provide ultra-high-speed broadband to businesses across the UK. This service addresses a gap in the UK market by offering 1 Gb/s symmetric connectivity with bandwidth guarantees and fast repair times, traditionally only available with more expensive leased lines. The new service is powered by Ciena’s XGS-PON pluggable optical line terminals (micro-OLTs) and optical network units (ONUs), enabling Commsworld to efficiently increase bandwidth as needed, even in rural areas.

As a business-focused provider, Commsworld is prioritizing quality service over quantity, particularly in regions where customer density is lower. By utilizing Ciena’s technology, Commsworld is able to deploy new services at each Point of Presence (PoP) without needing larger platforms, making it easier to bring high-speed connectivity to rural and underserved areas. The deployment is supported by Nomios, a European provider of professional services and managed solutions, which identified Ciena’s XGS-PON technology as the ideal solution for Commsworld’s business customers.

• Service: Ethernet over Fibre to the Premises (EoFTTP), offering 1 Gb/s symmetric connectivity.

• Technology: Powered by Ciena’s XGS-PON micro-OLTs and ONUs.

• Market Focus: Business customers, particularly in rural or underserved areas.

• Partnership: Project supported by Nomios for integration and service delivery.

• Commsworld Background: Leading Scottish ISP, founded in 1994, known for its role in public sector ICT contracts and fiber rollout.

“Commsworld’s new EoFTTP service represents a significant milestone in expanding high-speed connectivity options for businesses in the UK,” said Virginie Hollebecque, Vice President of Europe, Middle East, and Africa at Ciena.
