Telecom Egypt and SubCom have completed the dual landings of the SEA-ME-WE-6 subsea cable system in Egypt, marking a major milestone in the rollout of this high-capacity transcontinental network. The cable has been successfully landed at Port Said on the Mediterranean coast and Ras Ghareb on the Red Sea, with Telecom Egypt enabling terrestrial connectivity across the country through two distinct and resilient routes. This terrestrial crossing supports the system’s role as a vital bridge between Europe, Asia, and Africa.
The SEA-ME-WE-6 system, built by SubCom, stretches over 21,700 kilometers and connects 17 landing points from Singapore to Marseille. The Egypt segment is particularly strategic, given the country’s role as a digital gateway between continents. The system is backed by a 16-member consortium including major telecom players such as Microsoft, Orange, Singtel, Bharti Airtel, and China Unicom. Once live, SEA-ME-WE-6 will boost global internet capacity and strengthen the resilience of international data routes.
The cable’s routing through Egypt underscores the long-term importance of the Eurasian corridor for global telecom traffic, especially between Southeast Asia and Europe. Telecom Egypt emphasized the role of diversified routes in ensuring reliability and growth in global digital infrastructure, while SubCom highlighted its engineering and deployment contributions to the system’s buildout.
