Sparkle and Algérie Télécom signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a new submarine cable directly linking Italy and Algeria. The deal, announced during the Italy-Algeria Business Forum in Rome on July 23, 2025, aims to provide a high-capacity, low-latency, and fully redundant route between North Africa and Europe. The new system will address the growing demand for fast and reliable international connectivity, serving both consumer and enterprise markets.
In addition to laying the subsea cable, Sparkle will offer value-added services including cloud computing and cybersecurity, technical support for data center development, and dedicated European PoP infrastructure for Algérie Télécom. The collaboration is designed to strengthen Algeria’s digital transformation and diversify its international connectivity, currently limited by fewer direct links to Europe.
The initiative aligns with broader regional goals under the Mattei Plan for Africa, aimed at fostering balanced economic partnerships between Italy and African nations across energy, innovation, and infrastructure sectors. Both Sparkle and Algérie Télécom emphasized the long-standing relationship between the companies and their shared commitment to high-performance, secure global connectivity.
