T-Mobile will launch its T-Satellite service in partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink network on July 23, extending mobile coverage into more than 500,000 square miles of U.S. territory currently beyond the reach of terrestrial networks.
The service will connect directly to most smartphones made in the past four years — no special hardware or setup required — making T-Mobile the first U.S. wireless provider with commercial satellite-to-mobile service. According to the company, over 657 Starlink direct-to-cell satellites are now in orbit, with nearly 1.8 million users already participating in the beta program. More than a million messages have been sent from remote locations including national parks, oil fields, and off-grid areas, with three times as many messages received — underscoring the importance of seamless inbound connectivity.
At launch, T-Satellite will support SMS and MMS for Android devices, with iOS compatibility following. On October 1, a data-based service will activate, enabling app-based experiences over the satellite network. T-Mobile says it is working with major app developers — including AccuWeather, AllTrails, Apple, Google, WhatsApp, and X — to optimize satellite performance. T-Satellite will be included free in T-Mobile’s Experience Beyond plan, and offered to others, including AT&T and Verizon users, for $10/month. The service includes 911 texting from day one, with plans to expand 911 access to all compatible devices regardless of carrier later this year.
