Tejas Networks has been selected by PowerGrid Teleservices (PowerTel), a subsidiary of Power Grid Corporation of India, to deploy a next-generation SDN-based DWDM network across India. The project will upgrade PowerTel’s pan-India backbone with 400Gbps capacity and include the design, supply, installation, testing, commissioning, and integration of multi-terabit optical systems. The deployment will utilize Tejas’ TJ1600 DWDM/OTN platform, which supports up to 1.2Tbps per wavelength and integrates advanced alien wavelength technology for multi-vendor interoperability.
The upgrade will extend PowerTel’s greenfield and existing optical links, enhancing bandwidth scalability for hyperscalers, telecom operators, government, and enterprise customers. Tejas said its alien wavelength technology enables operators to increase capacity on brownfield networks without replacing existing infrastructure, offering faster deployment and lower cost.
Tejas Networks, part of the Tata Group through Panatone Finvest Ltd., continues to strengthen its footprint in large-scale optical infrastructure projects in India and abroad. The company’s products are deployed in more than 75 countries, serving telecom, defense, utility, and government sectors.
Arnob Roy, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director of Tejas Networks, said, “We are delighted to extend our long-standing partnership with PowerTel to augment the backbone capacity of their pan-India DWDM network to address the exploding demand for high-bandwidth connectivity from data center providers, telcos, government and large enterprises.”
• PowerTel selected Tejas Networks for a nationwide 400Gbps SDN-based DWDM upgrade
• Deployment uses the Tejas TJ1600 multi-terabit DWDM/OTN platform
• System supports up to 1.2Tbps per wavelength and alien wavelength interoperability
• Project covers both new greenfield and upgraded brownfield sites across India
• Targeted to meet growing demand from data centers, telcos, and enterprise users
🌐 Analysis:
This win further cements Tejas Networks’ position in India’s national fiber backbone modernization efforts, following its earlier projects with BSNL and BharatNet. The integration of SDN control and alien wavelength compatibility positions Tejas to compete more directly with multinational optical vendors such as Ciena, Nokia, and Huawei in high-capacity transport networks. PowerTel’s investment underscores India’s push to fortify digital infrastructure for hyperscaler and enterprise interconnect growth.
Tejas Networks Ltd., headquartered in Bengaluru, India, is a leading provider of optical, broadband, and wireless networking products for telecommunications carriers, internet service providers, utilities, and government networks.
