Verizon Deploys AI-Driven Open RAN with Samsung and Qualcommx`

Verizon has successfully deployed multi-vendor RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) functionality in its commercial network, marking a significant advancement in Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) technology. This deployment, in collaboration with Samsung Electronics and Qualcomm Technologies, integrates AI-driven solutions to enhance network efficiency and sustainability while reinforcing Verizon’s commitment to open, standardized network innovation.

By integrating Samsung’s AI-powered Energy Saving Manager (AI-ESM) with Qualcomm’s Dragonwing RAN Automation Suite’s RIC, Verizon has optimized energy efficiency in its network. AI-ESM identifies traffic patterns and dynamically adjusts network operations, reducing power consumption by an average of 15%, with peak savings reaching 35% per sector during low-traffic periods. This development highlights Verizon’s leadership in leveraging AI to maximize operational efficiency.

Key advancements in the deployment include:

  • AI-Powered Energy Efficiency: Samsung’s AI-ESM reduces power consumption without compromising network performance.
  • Multi-Vendor RIC Implementation: Qualcomm’s Dragonwing RAN Automation Suite enables vendor-neutral rApp marketplace programmability.
  • Open RAN Leadership: Verizon advances automation and orchestration capabilities through open interfaces and standardized protocols.
  • Network Optimization with AI: AI-driven RAN management enhances network adaptability, scalability, and sustainability.
  • Virtualized RAN Integration: Samsung’s software-based vRAN lays the foundation for AI-powered enhancements across the network.

“We believe that virtualization is the key to realizing the true benefits of AI. Samsung’s software-based vRAN provides the most optimal foundation to apply and utilize AI technology,” said Magnus Ojert, Senior Vice President & Head of US Networks Business, Samsung Electronics America.

“Verizon has been driving innovation in and adoption of O-RAN throughout the industry because we believe an open and standardized network drives more competition, more innovation, and increased supplier diversity,” said Adam Koeppe, Senior Vice President of Network Technology, Strategy, and Planning at Verizon. “Expanding on our industry-leading success with deploying O-RAN compliant radios and distributed units throughout our network, the introduction of the RAN Intelligent Controller will allow for greater flexibility and control over network operations.
