Verizon, in collaboration with Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies, has achieved a 5G uplink speed of 480 Mbps in a recent trial, setting a new North American record. The trial utilized advanced 5G technologies, including two TDD carrier component aggregation with C-band spectrum and uplink MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) technology, demonstrating Verizon’s ongoing efforts to enhance network performance for AI-driven applications and other data-intensive workloads.

The achievement underscores the growing demand for faster uplink speeds, which are critical for real-time applications such as AI model training, industrial automation, and cloud-based services. The trial used 200 MHz of C-band spectrum with 2×2 MIMO on each 100 MHz channel, powered by Ericsson’s Generation 4 RAN Processor 6672 and Massive MIMO TDD antenna AIR 6449.

  • Peak uplink speed: 480 Mbps using sub-6 GHz spectrum
  • Technologies used: 2×2 MIMO, carrier aggregation, TDD for dynamic spectrum allocation
  • Network equipment: Ericsson Generation 4 RAN Processor 6672, AIR 6449 Massive MIMO TDD antenna
  • Potential applications: AI-driven systems, real-time video processing, cloud gaming, augmented reality, IoT communications

“Faster uplink speeds, combined with other network advancements, ensure AI-driven systems can process real-time video feeds, sensor data, and user interactions without lag, improving responsiveness and accuracy,” said Srini Kalapala, Senior Vice President of Technology and Product Development at Verizon.
