Vodafone has chosen 1Finity, a Fujitsu company, to supply energy-efficient Open RAN radio units (RUs) for what is set to become one of Europe’s largest multi-vendor Open RAN deployments. The partnership underscores Vodafone’s commitment to network agility, energy efficiency, and cost optimization as it accelerates the shift to next-generation open network architectures.
The 1Finity Open RAN radios—built on more than two decades of mobile radio expertise—support 2G, 4G, and 5G in a single compact footprint, helping operators reduce tower lease costs and streamline zoning approvals. The RUs are O-RAN compliant and have demonstrated interoperability with most of the world’s leading distributed unit (DU) vendors in commercial deployments. Their low power consumption and multiband performance make them a strong fit for operators pursuing sustainability and flexibility goals in large-scale rollouts.
By integrating 1Finity radios, Vodafone gains the freedom to mix and match vendors for optimal performance and cost, while future-proofing its infrastructure for AI-enabled automation and software-driven optimization. The collaboration is a major endorsement of Open RAN’s readiness for large-scale commercial deployment across Europe.
• 1Finity will supply Vodafone with energy-efficient, O-RAN compliant radio units
• Radios support 2G/4G/5G in one enclosure to cut tower and zoning costs
• Proven interoperability with leading DU vendors and multi-vendor environments
• Designed to enable sustainable, scalable Open RAN architectures across Europe
• Marks a significant step toward Vodafone’s vision of agile, software-driven networks
“With the addition of reliable, energy-efficient, 1Finity Open RAN radios to their network, Vodafone is well-positioned for greater competitive advantage, agility and sustainability while reducing total costs,” said Patrik Eriksson, Vice President and Head of the Mobile System Business at 1Finity.
🌐 Analysis: Vodafone’s selection of 1Finity reinforces industry momentum toward open, disaggregated RAN architectures after years of limited large-scale adoption. It highlights growing confidence in Open RAN energy efficiency and multi-vendor interoperability. The move also positions Fujitsu’s 1Finity as a credible competitor to Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung in the European radio access market, with Open RAN maturity now shifting from trial to production scale.
