Woven Systems Enhances its Ethernet Fabric Architecture

Woven Systems, a start-up based in Santa Clara, California, is extending its flagship EFX 1000 Ethernet Fabric Switch with a 48-port Gigabit Ethernet “Top of Rack” edge switch and new fiber optic interfaces.

The Woven Ethernet Fabric architecture leverages standard 10Gig Ethernet technology with custom-ASICs that deliver Active Congestion Management to create a multi-path, Layer 2 meshed fabric for high-performance computing clusters (HPC) and enterprise data centers. The architecture is designed to enable scalable, sub-5 microsecond latency with full 10 Gbps bandwidth to 4,000 ports. The company is currently shipping its EFX 1000 Ethernet Fabric Switch, a modular 10U switching platform that supports up to 144 non-blocking 10 Gbps Ethernet ports.

With this announcement, Woven is introducing its TRX 100 Ethernet Switch, a 1U, high-performance, managed Ethernet solution designed for top-of-rack server and storage aggregation and virtualization in data centers. It includes 48 standard 10/100/1000BASE-TRX auto-sensing ports, and offers two options for the four 10 Gbps Ethernet uplinks: powered CX4 for active copper and optical CX4 cables, or SFP+ for fiber optic cabling. The inclusion of four 10 Gbps uplinks minimizes over-subscription, and enables the TRX 100 to deliver peak I/O performance from quad-core processors.

Woven Systems is also introducing a new 12-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet XFP interface card adds both flexibility and range to the EFX 1000 Ethernet Fabric Switch product line. A single switch can support any mix of twisted-pair copper (CX4) and fiber optic interfaces required to connect TRX 100 or other switches. The XFP and SFP+ Small Form Factor Pluggable transceivers are optically compatible. The optical interface supports short- and long-reach connections for distances up to 10 kilometers, allowing users to extend their EFX 1000 data center fabrics across the metropolitan area for disaster recovery applications.

  • In September 2007, Woven Systems announced $20 million in venture funding for its 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GE) fabric solutions. The funding was led by MDV-Mohr Davidow Ventures and included existing investors, Goldman Sachs and Palomar Ventures. The latest round of funding raises the total investment in the company to $35 million.
