Xilinx Debuts Multi-mode Radio Card Supporting 3GPP-LTE

At next week’s Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona, Xilinx will unveil its latest portfolio of flexible hardware solutions for mobile phone base stations, supporting all major air interfaces, including 3GPP-LTE. In addition, it will highlight a new digital pre-distortion (DPD) capability that enables infrastructure vendors to achieve significant power reductions from the latest generation of power amplifiers.

Xilinx will show a Multi-mode Radio Card supporting UMTS, 3GPP-LTE, TD-SCDMA and WiMAX, using the DSP resources of the FPGA to cost effectively implement the signal processing requirements of digital up conversion (DUC), digital down conversion (DDC), crest factor reduction (CFR) and digital pre-distortion (DPD).

Xilinx will also host a baseband demonstration that comprises a complete, high-throughput, 3GPP-LTE-compliant physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH), utilizing IP components, including an LTE turbo decoder, FFT/iFFT blocks with cyclic prefix insertion, rate matching and QAM mapper/demapper functions. Implemented using the latest VirtexTM-5 FPGA technology, the transmit and receive functions are connected by Ethernet to a host PC that sources and displays different video streams. A dual video stream arrangement is then used to demonstrate the capabilities of the >100Mbps net throughput performance of the 3GPP-LTE PHY, over a 10MHz frequency band.
