AST SpaceMobile Expands in Europe with Vodafone JV

March 4, 2025

A A

Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile are forming a new European satellite service provider to deliver direct-to-device connectivity for mobile network operators (MNOs) across the continent. The joint venture, known as SatCo, will use AST SpaceMobile’s satellite network to provide seamless mobile broadband coverage, integrating with existing terrestrial networks. Vodafone will contribute its engineering expertise and manage network operations, ensuring full European digital sovereignty with a headquarters and management team based in the region.

SatCo will exclusively distribute AST SpaceMobile’s services under a single turnkey arrangement, offering backhaul capabilities and a network of ground stations across Europe. The service will enable mobile broadband access in remote areas, including mountains and offshore locations, without requiring specialized devices or software updates. Vodafone successfully completed the world’s first space-based mobile video call in January 2025 using AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird satellites, demonstrating the system’s potential for widespread deployment.

Vodafone, AST SpaceMobile, and the University of Málaga are also launching a research and validation hub for space-based mobile broadband services, supported by the Spanish Space Agency. AST SpaceMobile is expanding its European presence with a new 5,600-square-meter manufacturing and office facility in Barcelona to enhance production capacity and accelerate system testing. Vodafone plans to introduce commercial space-based mobile broadband services across Europe in 2025 and 2026.

• SatCo will provide direct-to-device satellite connectivity across Europe.

• Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile will co-own and manage the new venture.

• The network will integrate with existing MNOs for seamless coverage.

• A European-based operations center will ensure digital sovereignty.

• Vodafone completed the first space-based mobile video call in January 2025.

• A research hub in Málaga will support technology development and validation.

• AST SpaceMobile is expanding manufacturing operations in Barcelona.

• Commercial rollout is expected in 2025 and 2026.

“Vodafone’s space-based mobile broadband will mean our customers can stay connected, wherever they are. Our new satellite company will be able to offer this pioneering technology to other European mobile operators through a turnkey service that combines Vodafone’s leading network and engineering with AST SpaceMobile’s ‘antennas in the sky,’” said Margherita Della Valle, Vodafone Group CEO.
