Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially launched its new Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region, expanding its global infrastructure footprint with a major $5 billion investment to support Taiwan’s growing demand for secure, low-latency cloud services. The new region features three Availability Zones at launch and is designed to help public and private sector organizations meet data residency requirements, accelerate digital transformation, and scale mission-critical applications locally.
The AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region is part of Amazon’s broader commitment to bolstering digital infrastructure across the Asia Pacific. By bringing compute, storage, networking, AI, and analytics services closer to end users in Taiwan, the new region offers improved performance and resiliency for industries ranging from semiconductors and financial services to healthcare and entertainment. Notable AWS customers in Taiwan include TSMC, Acer, Trend Micro, Chunghwa Telecom, and Cathay Financial Holdings. Amazon also highlighted ongoing collaborations with Taiwan’s tech ecosystem, including partners such as eCloudvalley, Netron, and MetaAge.
This investment builds on more than a decade of AWS infrastructure development in Taiwan. AWS first launched an Amazon CloudFront edge location in Taipei in 2014 and added AWS Direct Connect in 2018. The company later rolled out AWS Outposts and Local Zones to support hybrid workloads and edge computing needs. With the new region, AWS now operates 117 Availability Zones across 37 geographic regions globally and plans to add 13 more AZs in upcoming regions including Chile, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
