Broadbus Technologies, a start-up based in Boxborough, Massachusetts, closed $25 million in oversubscribed Series B funding for its video-on-demand (VOD) server systems for the cable television industry. The Broadbus video server, which is based entirely on commodity components, streams directly from random access memory with an integrated storage subsystem made of low cost disk arrays. This reduces drive counts in large systems from as many as 1,000 or more to as few as six drives. The server is scalable in Gigabit Ethernet increments and offers the ability to simultaneously deliver up to 19,200 MPEG-2 streams per server (38,400 per rack) while ingesting hundreds of channels of both “live” and pre-recorded content. The company said its video server is currently in operation at several significant North American cable operators and available for shipment.
The round was led by Star Ventures with participation by all existing investors including Battery Ventures, Charles River Ventures, Comcast Interactive Capital, Infineon Ventures and Wolf Ventures.
