Broadwing to Launch Converged Services Network

Broadwing is completing the roll-out of its MPLS-based Converged Services Network infrastructure.
Starting in Q2, Broadwing plans to launch both Layer 2 and Layer 3 Virtual Private Network (VPN) services at equivalent prices for enterprises and carriers. Broadwing’s Converged Services Network will offer any-to-any Layer 2 VPNs, security isolation from the public Internet and flexible local access choices, including Ethernet, Frame/ATM, Private Line, DSL, etc. — all under end-to-end Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

Broadwing also announced that it has selected Tellabs to provide the next-generation multi-service routing equipment that will support the rollout of the new Converged Services. The Tellabs 8800 Multi-service router (MSR) combines Layer 2 switching and QoS capabilities with the flexibility, scalability and intelligence of Layer 3 routing. The Tellabs 8800 MSR is part of the Tellabs MultiservicePLuS solution that is used by leading telecom service providers to aggregate multi-service traffic at the edge and link into their MPLS backbones.

  • In September 2004, Corvis changed its name to Broadwing Corporation. In 2003, Corvis acquired the Broadwing Communications from Cincinnati Bell. The deal included Broadwing’s 18,700 mile national fiber network, its all-optical switching platform, a state-of-the-art network operations center and all the other network elements necessary to provide its integrated and managed broadband telecommunications services.
  • Also in September 2004, Broadwing Communications (a division of Corvis Corp.) completed its acquisition of Focal Communications , a Chicago-based CLEC. Broadwing gained approximately 4,000 enterprise and wholesale customers in 23 Tier-One markets throughout the U.S.
