Ciena Adds 40G Transport Upgrade to FlexSelect Architecture

A A

Ciena introduced its FlexSelect 40G Shelf, a universal solution for its installed base of CN 4200 FlexSelect Advanced Services Platforms and CoreStream Agility Optical Transport Systems that can be used to transition metro, regional, long-haul and ultra long-haul networks to 40 Gbps while providing a migration path for 100G networking.

The new FlexSelect 40G Shelf can be deployed for in-service upgrades of granular 40G wavelengths alongside existing 10G wavelengths. This enables operators to add 40G wavelengths to 10G networks without have to re-engineer their networks.

The FlexSelect 40G Shelf features eight slots that support hot-swappable and wavelength-provisionable line cards with client interfaces including serial 40G for SONET, SDH and OTN, as well as 10G-multiplexed interfaces for SONET/SDH/OTN/Ethernet. The FlexSelect 40G Shelf also features full ITU G.709 OTN support, so when combined with Ciena’s unique FlexiPort technology, OTN extensions and hybrid ROADM capabilities, it enables unmatched efficiency in aggregating, grooming and switching traffic from 10 Mbps up to 40G.

Ciena said it began 40G research and development in 2000, and has since participated in multiple live industry demonstrations and field tests. In anticipation of customer demand, all of Ciena’s optical transport systems, including CoreStream Agility and the CN 4200, were made 40G-ready by 2005.
