Nortel Networks Introduces New VPN Framework

A A

Nortel Networks introduced a new Virtual Private Network (VPN) framework offering service providers additional tools for delivering managed VPNs that can be tailored to meet specific, per-site requirements. The framework adds four new VPN access capabilities:

  • Network-based IP VPN with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) remote access — adding Nortel Networks Alteon SSL remote access capability to a Nortel Networks Shasta network-based IP VPN will allow end-users to remotely access the VPN using either a standard browser equipped with SSL (any browser-equipped device on the Internet) or their current Nortel Networks Contivity VPN client.
  • Ethernet extentions for IP VPNs — Nortel Networks Passport Multiservice WANs (ATM and Frame Relay) will be interworked with Optical Ethernet networks.

  • IPSec encryption of Network-based IP VPN — Introduction of Frame Relay interfaces on Contivity allows new VPN deployment options that will enable service providers to encrypt the last mile of a Passport multiservice network-based IP VPN or Frame Relay service. This will give enterprises end-to-end encryption and strong QoS). Enterprises will also be able to expand the reach of their service by securely connecting branch offices across the Internet via Contivity tunneling.

  • Passport IP VPN upgrade — A new software release for Nortel Networks’ Passport Multiservice Switches will increase the scale, scope, performance and reliability of the Passport IP VPN solution. The release is planned for Q3.

Nortel Networks’ IP VPN portfolio encompasses the Alteon SSL VPN Switch, Contivity Secure IP Services Gateway, its Optical Ethernet solutions, Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node, and its Passport Multiservice Switches.
