O2 Telefónica Germany is partnering with Google Cloud and Nokia to migrate core 5G functions to the cloud, aiming to enhance network efficiency and scalability. The collaboration will move Nokia’s Policy Control Functions to Google Cloud’s infrastructure, including Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), to support cloud-native 5G deployment. This transition is expected to improve network automation, reduce latency, and accelerate the introduction of new 5G services while maintaining high reliability for customers.
By shifting to a software-defined architecture, O2 Telefónica seeks to modernize its network and streamline telecom workloads. Google Cloud’s infrastructure provides a scalable and secure platform for deploying 5G network functions, while Nokia contributes its cloud-native 5G core technology. O2 Telefónica previously worked with Google Cloud on charging solutions and is now expanding the partnership to include network functions. The company’s selection of Google Cloud followed a thorough evaluation process focused on seamless customer onboarding and security compliance.
O2 Telefónica’s move aligns with broader industry trends, where cloud-based networks enable greater agility and faster service deployment. Nokia’s Policy Control Functions will play a key role in automating network capabilities and managing service policies in real time. Google Cloud’s role includes providing the foundational infrastructure to support O2 Telefónica’s shift to a fully cloud-native 5G core. This partnership follows similar cloud-based transformations by major telecom providers worldwide.
