Sprint Debuts 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot

Sprint has begun marketing Sierra Wireless’ “Overdrive” 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot that lets up to 5 Wi-Fi enabled devices to share one 3G/4G connection. The unit supports WiMAX peak download speeds of more than 10 Mbps and peak upload speeds of 4 Mbps. Average download speeds are in the range of 3-6 Mbps. 3G peak data speeds (EVDO Rev A.) are up to 3.1 Mbps down and 1.8 Mbps up, and average download speeds of 600 kbps – 1.4 Mbps.

Overdrive 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot also includes built-in GPS capability (on 3G), MicroSD slot for up to 16 GB memory cards creating shared storage with up to five connected devices, and an extended Wi-Fi range of up to 150 feet.

The device will go on sale on January 10 for $99.99 (excluding taxes) after a $50 mail-in-rebate with a two-year service agreement.

The silicon inside is the Beceem 250 (WiMax) & MC5728 (CDMA module with QSC6085).
