Tellabs introduced an enhanced version of its flagship Tellabs 5500 digital cross-connect system, featuring a consolidated core switch design that increases switch capacity by 50% while reducing floor space requirements by 78%. The Tellabs 5500 system carries voice and data traffic over communications networks and is the leading digital cross-connect system in the U.S.
The new Tellabs 5500 offers an OC-48 interface, reducing the need to purchase additional add/drop multiplexers (ADMs). The Tellabs 5500 system also connects directly to routers and ATM switches. Enhanced Ethernet transport capabilities include standards-based Ethernet over SONET.
