Telstra Tests 5G in Melbourne with Ericsson

Telstra is conducting outdoor tests on one of the world’s first 5G trial systems in Melbourne, Australia using Ericsson prototype systems.

Telstra’s 5G trial system used 800 MHz of spectrum, 10 times more than what the carrier currently use for their 4G network. The companies reported aggregate speeds of greater than 20 Gbps, with an indicative latency of at least half of what is seen in current 4G networks.

“Today we conducted the first live 5G trial on Australia soil, and did so in a real world, outdoor environment. This provided a truly realistic view of what 5G will be able to offer,” Jones says.

“5G enhances existing services with additional capacity, higher speeds and lower latency, while supporting a large number of machine-type connections. We are very excited to be working with Ericsson on this technology and how we can use 5G in the future to further connect and empower Australians,” stated Telstra’s Chief Technology Officer, Philip Jones.
