Vertical Systems: Mid-2024 U.S. Carrier Ethernet LEADERBOARD

Vertical Systems Group’s research shows that six companies ranked on the U.S. Carrier Ethernet LEADERBOARD for mid-2024 (in order of retail port share as of June 30, 2024): AT&T, Lumen, Spectrum Enterprise, Verizon, Comcast Business, and Cox Business. To make the LEADERBOARD, providers need at least 4% of the U.S. retail Ethernet services market.

The Challenge Tier grew to seven providers in mid-2024 with the addition of Granite, which moved up from the Market Player tier. The companies in the Challenge Tier (in alphabetical order) are: Altice USA (including Lightpath), Cogent, Frontier, Granite, GTT, Windstream, and Zayo. The Challenge Tier consists of providers with between 1% and 4% of the market.

U.S. Ethernet Market Overview: Mid-2024

• AT&T holds the top spot on the LEADERBOARD.

• The rankings for the top six providers remain unchanged from the end of 2023.

• Year-end 2024 rankings may change due to small differences in market share among the LEADERBOARD companies.

• DIA (Dedicated Internet/Cloud Access) is the largest and fastest-growing U.S. Carrier Ethernet service by both revenue and ports.

• Ethernet market growth faces challenges from migration to other services like Carrier Managed SD-WAN, SASE, Wavelength services, and Dark Fiber.

• Three LEADERBOARD companies—AT&T, Lumen, and Verizon—hold MEF 3.0 Carrier Ethernet (CE) certification.

The Market Player tier includes providers with less than 1% market share. Some companies in this tier (in alphabetical order) include: ACD, AireSpring, Alaska Communications, Alta Fiber, American Telesis, Arelion, Armstrong Business Solutions, Astound Business, Bluebird Network, Breezeline, Brightspeed, BT Global Services, Centracom, Consolidated Communications, Conterra, Crown Castle, Douglas Fast Net, DQE Communications, Epsilon, Everstream, Exa Infrastructure, ExteNet Systems, Fatbeam, FiberLight, First Digital, FirstLight, Flo Networks, Fusion Connect, GCX, Glo Fiber, Great Plains Communications, Hunter Communications, Intelsat, Logix Fiber Networks, LS Networks, MetTel, MetroNet Business, Midco, Momentum Telecom, NTT, Orange Business, Pilot Fiber, PS Lightwave, Ritter Communications, Segra (including UPN), Silver Star Telecom, Sparklight Business, Syringa, Tata Communications, TDS Telecom, TPx, Uniti, US Signal, WOW! Business, Ziply Fiber, and others.

Market share is based on the number of retail customer ports installed. Vertical Systems Group’s analysis covers six service segments: Ethernet DIA (Dedicated Internet Access), E-Access to IP/MPLS VPN, Ethernet Private Lines, Ethernet Virtual Private Lines, Metro LAN, and WAN VPLS.
