New Edge Networks Reports DSL Operational Highlights

New Edge Networks, a privately held carrier supplying broadband services to small and mid-sized cities across the US, reported that its 2002 year-over-year revenues almost tripled to $60 million. Q4 revenues were $18.4 million, more than double the $8.8 million for the same three-month period a year earlier. About 60% of New Edge Networks’ 600 central office locations for DSL service are producing positive operating income, up from 24% of central offices at December 31, 2001. Another 21% of the central office locations are within $1,000 a month of recurring revenue before also becoming positive. The company leases lines and transport from other carriers and does not rely on unbundled network switching services.

  • Last month, New Edge Networks began marketing Layer 2 VPN services over its 600 switch, national ATM network. Within New Edge Networks’ coverage area, which includes more than 360 small and midsize cities in 29 states, the Layer 2 Private Network uses dedicated business-class DSL or T-1 connections. In locations outside this coverage area, New Edge Networks completes the Layer 2 Private Network using Frame Relay. New Edge Networks already offered Layer 3 VPNs.
